As the school year comes to a close, the art department at GIS is filled with excitement as we prepare to celebrate the culmination of our students’ artistic endeavours in the Visual Arts exhibition. Aptly named “Fruition,” this showcase features the remarkable work of students from year 11, 12, and 13. At GIS, we hold a firm belief that art education is not just about acquiring practical skills; it’s about empowering students to explore their ideas, express their emotions, and engage with the world around them.
Nurturing Creative Minds
From the early years of primary school, we encourage our students to embrace their creativity and individuality. One of our beloved projects is the Kindness Character project in year four, where students craft clay creatures imbued with kindness superpowers. Inspired by the work of local artist May Chan, this project not only fosters reflections on kindness but also hones sculpting skills. This freedom to explore and create continues throughout their GIS journey, culminating in self-initiated projects by the time they reach IGCSE level.
Exploring Diversity
In our curriculum, we emphasise the importance of exposing students to diverse artists and cultures, fostering a sense of connection and understanding across boundaries. Regular visits to local galleries like Ilham and the National Art Gallery are integral to this approach, offering students first-hand encounters with art and artists.
Celebrating Personal Identity
Beyond gallery visits, we are delighted to showcase our students’ work, providing platforms for them to express their identities and perspectives. The recent Identity Exhibition was a testament to this, featuring pieces that delved into cultural heritage and personal experiences. Projects like the Year 7 still-life exploration of food and identity not only encourage artistic expression but also foster cultural understanding and appreciation among peers.
A Sanctuary for Creativity
Moreover, we recognise the art room as a sanctuary for students amidst the stresses of school life. Here, they find solace in creativity, a space to process their thoughts and emotions. With a well-equipped art department and dedicated teachers, students are encouraged to explore a myriad of mediums and techniques, from traditional drawing and painting to ceramics and digital art. Whether it’s crafting cardboard sculptures based on bird sightings or delving into the world of printmaking, students are empowered to find their creative voices and passions.
The Legacy of GIS Alumni
The legacy of our art department is marked by the success stories of our alumni, who continue to make their mark in the creative industries and beyond. From award-winning production designers to budding cover designers at renowned publishing houses, GIS graduates exemplify the transformative power of arts education. Yet, it’s not just about careers in the arts; the skills nurtured in the art room are transferable to diverse fields, equipping students for success in an ever-changing world.
The Role of Arts Education
As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing creativity, global-mindedness, and emotional resilience in our students. We believe that the arts are not just a subject but a pathway to empowerment, preparing our young people to thrive as leaders and innovators in whatever path they choose to pursue. At GIS, the journey from imagination to fruition is not just celebrated; it’s cherished as a testament to the boundless potential of artistic expression.
