The dramatic tension and nervous excitement rippled through Garden International School’s main foyer as the Primary F1 in Schools race day began. This thrilling event marked the culmination of a long school term filled with hard work, team collaboration, and student learning, all leading to the moment of truth: determining who had the fastest and best cars in this year’s competition. The race day featured 150 GIS Year 6 students and eight visiting students from POWIS (Penang) competing in a series of exhilarating and high-energy races. Parents, students, and teachers came together to celebrate and cheer on all the competing teams, making this a fitting and memorable event for our Year 6 students as they prepare to transition to secondary school next year.
For our students, this event was an impressive showcase of the dedication and commitment they put into designing and crafting their vehicles—it encompassed much more than just a race! The F1 for Schools project, which is part of our GIS Primary STEAM programme, challenges Year 6 students to develop interpersonal skills and teamwork, along with design and communication skills. All these elements combine to create an exciting, creative, and innovative learning environment for everyone involved.
Student Learning through STEAM
All aspects of STEAM are incorporated into the F1 for Schools project, culminating in one incredible final portfolio of student learning, including:
- Science: Students learn about contact forces and develop an understanding of aerodynamics.
- Technology: Students use tools to design and create a model fit for purpose, including video editing and portfolio design.
- Engineering: Students use a wind tunnel to test their vehicle’s performance, making adjustments and improvements accordingly.
- Art: Students design the graphics for their logo, brand identity, and the overall look of the car.
- Mathematics: Students apply precise measurements and accuracy to enhance the overall design, adhering to a strict set of competition criteria.
In addition to these elements, students demonstrate essential communication skills through a 4-minute video and showcase teamwork skills required to successfully complete the project. It’s clear that this represents an epic achievement for our Primary Year 6 students.
Proudly Hosting Primary F1 for Schools
GIS is proud to hold this competition as one of the highlights of the Primary School calendar, showcasing our commitment to nurturing and developing students’ skills across many different disciplines. Additionally, the sportsmanship and resilience demonstrated by the students throughout the F1 for Schools project is incredible! It’s thanks to our wonderful students and families, as well as the dedicated Year 6 staff, that this event is such a huge success!
