More and more universities and employers are seeking applicants with real world, transferable skills – not just great grades. That’s why at GIS we have developed a bespoke internship programme – one which provides our Sixth Form students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the workforce.
Read on to discover how we are joining up with Malaysia’s movers and shakers to offer a dynamic and unique work experience programme for our students….
Open to all of our Year 12s, the programme runs during the summer break between Year 12 and 13 – providing students with the opportunity to undertake 4 weeks of work experience in their area of passion, usually connected to their intended undergraduate studies. The placements normally take place in or around Kuala Lumpur, across a diverse range of organisations that include the city’s best hospitals, global advertising agencies, financial and legal institutions and well known conglomerates.
What’s important about our internship programme is that it’s not tokenistic. It’s designed around our GIS learner skills, complementing their studies and helping them to build a valuable professional portfolio. Perhaps most importantly, it ensures our students get the opportunity to collaborate and problem solve with experienced industry professionals. Indeed, the programme allows GIS students the chance to apply skills and knowledge within an authentic environment, as well as experiencing the challenges of day-to-day working life. For all intents and purposes, we have developed a unique first work experience programme which enables our students to thrive.
The programme is a unique in Malaysia. We are proud to be the only international high school in Kuala Lumpur to offer such an advanced internship programme of this quality and nature.
The programme doesn’t just benefit our students. The companies we partner with enjoy their own benefits too, including: fresh new perspectives; insights into social media and digital technologies; the professional development benefits from mentoring; the reputational value working with young people affords and the joy of giving back – there are so many rewards when working with young, passionate students.
For the past two successful years of the THRIVE programme, we have been actively supported by our school’s thriving alumni network. Now, we have exciting ambitions for the next stage in the programme’s development and would like to extend this unique internship programme to our wider community.
So: if you are a GIS parent, connected with our community, or a KL Captain of Industry interested in getting involved, please get in touch – we would love to connect and share more details with you. You may also know other companies that would be interested – if so, please share the details and we will connect with them directly.
Alternatively, if you’re a student outside of the GIS community but are feeling inspired by the THRIVE programme and want to learn more about how GIS could enhance your A Level studies – check out our new Sixth Form brochure here or get in touch to organise a personal tour with our admissions team.
