Our secondary students come together to showcase their house spirit, creativity, and teamwork as part of our annual Eisteddfod celebrations in the last month of each school year. The history of the Eisteddfod dates back to the 12th century and originated in Wales. It was the Welsh roots of our school founder, Sally Watkins, that inspired its inception at GIS, and this cherished tradition continues today.
Showcasing House Spirit and Teamwork
The annual Eisteddfod celebration provides students with an opportunity to showcase their talents through a variety of creative activities and performances, with the entire secondary school in attendance. As members of one of four school houses—Chancellor, Crest, Queen, or Sultan—students work together to earn points for their house, with the ultimate goal of securing the coveted House Cup for the year!
This year’s Paris Olympics-themed Eisteddfod 2024 featured many truly spellbinding group performances, hilarious fun endeavours, and numerous entries from our non-performance events. A fitting start to the Paris Olympic-themed event was the secondary faculties’ combined interpretation of the GIS Olympic torch journey, which proved to be an eclectic and memorable experience!
Impressive Band Performances
First up were our youngest secondary students, Year 7 and 8. Although they may have been nervous, it didn’t show as they performed with confidence and finesse in the band performance competition. Not to be outdone, our Year 9 and 10 students followed with equally exceptional performances, worthy of any musical gig.
House Mascots and Dance Competitions
In the afternoon, a series of events were organised for students across multiple year groups. This team approach fosters teamwork, collaboration, and a strong house spirit, as older and younger students work together toward a common goal—in this case, fun and engaging performances for their house.
The first activity involved creating Olympic mascot costumes for each house. This resulted in four truly incredible designs, with each house team sourcing materials and crafting their costumes with minimal staff guidance. This was a tough one for the judges to decide. The next highlight, a favourite among many spectators, was the house dance. Students faced the challenge of creating choreography, learning the dance, dressing their team, and delivering a polished performance on the day. They all rose to the occasion, with each house putting on lively, colourful, and electrifying performances. GIS definitely has talent!
