At the end of last year, we received a great update on how the money we raised in our school’s first Big Read initiative in 2017 is still having an impact today!
Back in 2017, our GIS students helped to raise over 54,000 RM through their dedication to reading; half of this money was used to support the renovation of a local school (JREC Klang, you can see the video here) and the other 50% was used to fund a water project run by Epic Homes. The project, which began in April 2018, aimed to provide a fresh water supply to an Orangsali village in Kampung Hulu Tamu.
Neither of these projects were overnight fixes – it turns out ensuring a sustainable water supply at grassroots level takes time and dedication. Therefore, it was wonderful news to hear that the water project is now in Phase 2, with 65% of the tank and piping network the village requires already laid. In addition, the team of villagers working on the project reached a major milestone this month by successfully routing a very extensive network of piping through uneasy forest trails, over roads and sometimes between houses in order to reach the village!
Once all of the tanks and pipes are in place, the next stage will be to ensure all the connectors are fastened for water flow. It’s fair to say, that none of this could have happened without the passionate commitment from the project coordinators, Epic Communities.
